It all came down to the last match on Sunday for the Ulster under 18 girls at the weekend in their Interprovincial campaign.

The girls have always been successful in the Interpro’s and with a helping hand from coaches Alison McNeill and Assistant coach and Irish superstar Lynsey McVicker MBE, the girls were in great hands.

After a superb performance throughout the tournament, the girls had to fight it out on Sunday in the deciding match between them and Leinster. Ulster needed a draw or a win to win the tournament.

They got off to a fantastic start on Saturday morning with a 5-0 victory over Connacht. Megan Frazer was the star of the show netting a hat-trick from 3 short-corners. Goal scorers also included Sophie Bloor and Katie Hewitt

Next stop was Munster where the girls enjoyed another comfortable 3-1 win. Megan Frazer, Sophie Bloor and Emma Thornbury were the goal scorers.

Sunday saw an in inspirational Ulster out in force against South East. Goal scorers included Lizzie Colvin, Catherine Steenson, Emma Thornbury, Megan Frazer got 2 and it was hat-trick time for Sarah McClure this time.

Due to equal success by Leinster, the last match was the all important one for the Ulster girls. In their agonizing final match the girls were unlucky to lose 3-1. Sarah McClure snatched a consolation goal in the last 10 minutes for Ulster but unfortunately it just wasn’t enough to clinch the title.

The girls put on an excellent performance throughout the tournament and were unfortunate to come runners up but after success for the previous last seven years the girls will sure to be out to win their title back next year.

Thanks must go to their sponsors, Kukri, Bank of Ireland, Xintec Solutions and the tournament sponsors ESB. In addition to his thanks must also go to the organiser, including the umpiring committee, ball girls and Instonians Hockey Club who provided the pitch at Shaw’s Bridge.
