The
UWHU U15 Tournament held on Sunday 27th May at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club
threw up some surprises.
Last year’s joint winners, the host club Victorians and Ballymena
both won their pools but were beaten by Lurgan and Omagh respectively
in the semi-finals. Lurgan fought hard to hold onto an early goal scored
by Jill Edgar to end Victorians’ hopes of retaining the trophy.
In the other semi-final, Omagh beat Ballymena in an exciting penalty shoot
out after a scoreless draw, their winner coming from Nikki Hawkes.
The final was a closely contested affair although Lurgan held the balance
of play. A late goal by Jill Edgar sealed a well deserved win to end an
outstanding season for the Co. Armagh Club.
Ann Jameison, UWHU President Elect, presented the trophy to the Lurgan
captain Chloe McIllwaine and the player of the match award was awarded
to Ballymena’s Ulster 16 player Catherine McGivern.
Victorians would like to thank the sponsors of the tournament, Feherty
Travel and David Gotto All-Sports. Thanks also go to Lisnagarvey Hockey
Club for the use of their pitches and facilities and to Dave Henderson
for his help throughout the afternoon.
During the tournament a cheque for £300.00 was presented to Mrs
Judith Poucher from Newry on behalf of the Anaphylaxis Campaign. Club
Members had chosen this charity to support Grace McVeigh, a junior member
of Victorians whose sister, Jane, died earlier in the year.
